Dear Readers
Nowadays , many recorded treasures of the free improvised music are re-issued and their original copies are rising incredible prices on discogs or ebay to the point that I feel it quite insane...Even many sold-out CD or LP reissues are reaching amounts in dozens of euros (plus rising P.& P. charges). Sometimes, it is clear that some "reissuers" have no idea (or simply don't care) about the actual musical interest, and the quality of the recording which helps to actually figure out how the music actually sounded for the ones who caught it live.
Anyway, here my own list of some GREAT not-yet-reissued "master works" of recorded free improvised music.
Firstly, anyone serious enough would include almost all the Po-Torch label's catalog, the labour of love of Paul Lovens and Paul Lytton (until 1985). Here some huge albums !
WAS IT ME ? Paul Lovens and Paul Lytton drums percussions home made electronics Po Torch ptr - jwd 01 recorded 1975 by my great friend Michel Huon and issued 1977.
To my own taste the Lovens - Lytton duo was one of the GREATEST groups in improvised music.
WHEN I SAY SLOWLY I MEAN AS SOON AS POSSIBLE ptr - jwd 03 Paul Rutherford and Paul Lovens trombone and percussion
Derek Bailey wrote in 1995 that the legendary solo album The Gentle Harm of the Bourgeoisie of Paul Rutherford is the genuine article of solo free improvisation.
I would add another reference in this : OLD MOERS ALMANACH Paul Rutherford solo trombone on Ring Records and reissued on Moers Music.
A MOINHO DA ASNEIRA - À CERCA DA BELA VISTA A GRAÇA Po Torch ptr - jwd 05. Paul Lovens and Paul Lytton percussions 1977
This is their second one effort and it reaches the no man's land of experimentation - dérive - écriture automatique.
THE FETCH Po Torch PTR - jwd 08 Paul Lovens and Paul Lytton percussions 1984 . Recorded in Pisa 1980 and London Actual Music 1981 by Jean-Marc Foussat. Bill Dixon who attended their duo set and Evan Parker 's large group with Lytton, Lovens, Barry Guy... was completely smackgobbled ! This is the point of origin of the process through wich Bill Dixon went to perform and record with Tony Oxley and Barry Guy. Some years after , Cecil Taylor performed and recorded in Berlin with Lovens, Bennink, Oxley, Moholo and Sommer (1988). This was issued in a legendary Cecil Taylor Box by Free Music Production in 1989
The legendary critic and photograher Gérard Rouy's BEST free improvised album is :
IDYLLEN und KATASTROPHEN Po Torch ptr - jwd 06 Sven Åke Johansson / Alexander von Schlippenbach/ Derek Bailey / Derek Bailey / Gûnter Christmann / Wolfgang Fuchs / Paul Lovens / Candace Natvig / Maarten van Regteren Altena 1979.
WEAVERS PO TORCH ptr - jwd 07 Günter Christmann / Maarten Altena/ Paul Lovens 1979 . One of the very best trio ever !
Solomusiken Für Posaune Und Kontrabaß Günter Christmann trombone and double bass C/S records. The master of the short form with a kind of fantasy.
From the INCUS label founded by Evan Parker, Derek Bailey and Tony Oxley, there is a absolutely wonderful album which embodies the so-called British free - improvisation at his best and most idiosyncratic !
BALANCE Incus 11 Ian Brighton / Radu Malfatti/ Frank Perry / Philipp Wachsmann / Colin Wood 1973.
Other INCUS gems !
COMPATIBLES INCUS 50 Derek Bailey - Evan Parker duo 1985. No comment !
SUNDAY BEST INCUS 32 Garry Todd & Roger Turner tenor saxophone and percussion 1979.
Again from PO TORCH label a real gem
THE LAST SUPPER PO TORCH ptr - jwd 09 Toshinori Kondo and Paul Lovens 1984. The trumpet implosion with incredible percussive sounds.
SPARKS OF THE DESIRE MAGNETO BEAD 7 Chamberpot : Phil Wachsmann violin electronics, Richard Beswick electric guitar, Tony Wren double bass 1977. I attended their concerts two times seated so close of them that I opened the door of what was actually free improvisation.
